What is Hand Therapy?

Hand Therapy as defined by the Hand Therapy Certification Commission, 2009

Hand therapy is the art and science of rehabilitation of the upper limb, which includes the hand, wrist, elbow, and shoulder girdle.  It is a merging of occupational therapy and physical therapy theory and practice that combines comprehensive knowledge of the structure of the upper limb with function and activity.  Using specialized skills in assessment, planning and treatment, hand therapists provide therapeutic interventions to prevent dysfunction, restore function and/ or reverse the progression of pathology of the upper limb in order to enhance an individual’s ability to execute tasks and to participate fully in life situations.

Who will benefit from Hand Therapy?
If you’ve been affected by trauma or an accident that’s left you with injured tendons, fractures, nerves, finger, hands, or arms amputations, wounds, scars, or burns, you may be a good candidate for hand therapy.

Do you have carpal tunnel syndrome?  Tennis elbow?  Perhaps you suffer from arthritis, or a neurologic condition as a result of a stroke.  If so,  you too could benefit greatly from our hand therapy treatments.

We’ll help you with…
Non-operative or conservative treatment.

  • Chronic or acute pain management.
  • Desensitization following tram or nerve injury.
  • Post nerve injury sensory re-education.
  • Increased motion, strength, and/or dexterity through the design and implementation of home exercise programs.
  • Splint fabrication for prevention or correction of injury.
  • Life skills training through the use of equipment and adapted methods.
  • Preparation to return to work.

We can also help with Postoperative Rehabilitation;

  • The prevention of infection and healing assistance of open or sutured wounds.
  • Swollen, or raised hypertrophic, or hypersensitive scars.
  • Swelling reduction.
  • Protection of surgery or increase movement through the fabrication of orthoses.
  • Home exercise instruction.
